AHI Releases Book Review of Greek Genocide Accounts in American Naval War Diaries

NO. 50

WASHINGTON, DC — The American Hellenic Institute (AHI) is pleased to publish a review by AHI Board Member Van Coufoudakis Ph.D. of The Greek Genocide in American Naval War Diaries—Naval Commanders Report and Protest Death Marches and Massacres in Turkey’s Pontus Region, 1921-1922 (New Orleans: The University of New Orleans Press, 2020), Robert Shenk and Sam Koktzoglou, editors.

The editors of this volume, with forward written by Admiral James Stavridis (USN, Ret.), present for the first time the war diaries of U.S. naval commanders whose ships operated in the Black Sea until mid-1923. These records, kept in the U.S. National Archives, provide new accounts of the death marches of Greek women, children and men organized and carried out by Turkish forces and their agents.

Dr. Coufoudakis is Dean Emeritus of the College of Arts and Sciences, Indiana University-Purdue University; and Rector Emeritus, University of Nicosia, Nicosia, Cyprus.
