AHI Applauds Secretary of State Pompeo’s Public Rebukes of Turkey

NO. 152

Washington, DC—AHI applauds Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s public criticisms of Turkey for its provocations during his participation at a virtual NATO ministerial meeting on December 1, 2020.

According to a Reuters report, Secretary Pompeo stated Turkey’s purchase of the Russian-made S-400 missile defense system was a “gift” to Moscow. He added that Turkey undermines NATO security, causes instability with Greece and Cyprus, and was wrong to send mercenaries from Syria into Libya and Nagorno-Karabakh.

“Secretary of State Pompeo was correct to not mince words about Turkey’s provocative actions and their detrimental effects at the NATO ministerial meeting,” AHI President Nick Larigakis said. “The public rebuke of a fellow NATO-member nation from the highest level of the State Department is unprecedented, and frankly, long overdue and justified. We call on the United States to implement policy, such as sanctions, to hold Turkey accountable for these actions that are not in the United States’ best interests and undermine NATO’s security interests.”
