It is important to note this when reviewing the responses. A "U" or "undecided" does not mean that the candidate is unsympathetic to our issues but requires more information. CYPRUS

2000 marks the 26th anniversary of Turkey's illegal invasion and occupation of 37.3 percent of Cyprus in 1974 with the illegal use of American supplied arms and equipment in violation of the U.S. Foreign Assistance Act of 1961, as amended, the United Nations Charter (Art.2 para.4), the NATO Treaty (Preamble and Art. 1) and international law. Turkey's illegal occupation and colonization of the occupied area for over 25 years are a stain on the Western Alliance (NATO) and US foreign policy. Despite repeated attempts by the government of Cyprus to negotiate and resolve the problem, the military controlled Turkish government remains intransigent. On August 4, 1998 the Administration publicly held the Turkish side responsible for raising unacceptable conditions and for frustrating progress on Cyprus. During 1999 and 2000 the Turkish side has raised unacceptable demands for the recognition of two independent states in Cyprus.
