The American Hellenic Institute Expresses its Deep Sorrow on the Passing of Lambros Papantoniou
WASHINGTON, DC—The American Hellenic Institute is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Lambros Papantoniou. He passed away peacefully the morning of Thursday May 28, 2009.
Mr. Papantoniou was the Washington diplomatic correspondent for the Greek daily paper Eleftheros Typos, Radio Thessaloniki, and the U.S. weekly newspaper Greek News.
He arrived in the U.S. in 1973 to study international law and political science at the University of California, Berkeley, where he acquired a Masters Degree and Juris Doctorate. In 1975 he began working as a journalist specializing in U.S. foreign policy issues relating to Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, and the Balkans.
He is survived by three sisters and one brother in Greece, one brother in Boston, and his nephew Stavros Stavrakis in Philadelphia.
AHI Executive Director Nick Larigakis said, “He was an outstanding individual with an unwavering dedication to journalism. He was never afraid to ask the hard questions and always sought to bring our issues to the forefront of U.S. foreign policy reporting. I am truly grateful to have known him throughout the years here in Washington and for his strong support of the AHI, our efforts, and me personally. May his memory Be Eternal.”
Lambros’ Viewing will be held at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Washington DC, 36th Street and Massachusetts Avenue, N.W. Tuesday, June 2, 5–7p.m. He will be buried in his native village of Mandra, in Xanthi, Greece.
On behalf of all our members and staff, we extend our heartfelt sympathies and condolences to his family and friends.
He will be greatly missed. May his memory Be Eternal.
