AHI Sends a Letter to Chairman Gene Taylor of the Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower and Expeditionary Forces Regarding Two OSPREY Mine Hunter Ships
WASHINGTON, DC—On November 11, 2008, the American Hellenic Institute sent a letter to the Chairman of the Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower and Expeditionary Forces, Gene Taylor (D-MS), regarding two OSPREY mine hunter ships.
The OSPREY mine hunter ships are intended to find, classify, and destroy moored and bottom naval mines from critical waterways.
In the original legislation that had been submitted to Congress, Greece was included as a country to receive two of these ships. But regrettably, the final legislation did not include the authorization to transfer the vessels to Greece. No other naval vessel transfers to the other countries included in the original legislation were excluded; only Greece.
“Greece is an important Ally in the fight against terrorism and a member of NATO. Greece is participating in many operations by International Organizations such as NATO, the UN, and the EU. Greece’s borders are surrounded by water and she has a colossal task to safeguard those waters. Greece has a clear record of vital contributions to the Western alliance. It seems prudent to aid our friend and ally and lift any restrictions on the transfer of these vessels to Greece,” said Nick Larigakis.
