BACKGROUND:
Attached, please find the January 31, 2006 New York Times Editorial, and our response to the Editor.
The New York Times Editorial “The Way Forward for Turkey”, 1/31/06, written by Editorial Board directed by Gail Collins, Editorial Page Editor, exhibits a serious lack of knowledge of the facts regarding the Cyprus problem. The editorial can be characterized as a one-sided, biased piece blaming the Greek Cypriots for voting “against reunification” because they didn’t vote affirmatively on the Annan Plan. In addition, the editorial incredibly states that “Washington and Brussels should also renew pressure on the Greek Cypriots for reunification and reward the Turkish Cypriots, economically and politically, for their efforts” as a means to bypass the Republic of Cyprus.
The Editorial omits key facts such as Turkey’s continuing 32 year illegal military occupation of 37.3 percent of Cyprus with over 40,000 troops, the 120,000 illegal Turkish mainland colonialists, and the expulsions of over 180,000 Greek Cypriots from their homes, condemned by UN General Assembly and Security Council resolutions.
The editorial reverses the role of the victim, the Greek Cypriots, and the aggressor, Turkey, and fails to comment on the obvious shortcomings of the Annan Plan, a number of which are set forth in AHI’s response.
